How to export your iPhone or Android contacts to Excel

Your phone can export its contacts, but as contact cards in a vCard file, which is made for address books, not spreadsheets. Excel opens CSV files. Here's how to get from one to the other on iPhone and on Android with Apple's and Google's own tools, and the shortcut in Sigbot's phone app.

The short answer.

Neither phone exports contacts as a spreadsheet. An iPhone exports contact cards, from the Contacts app or from iCloud.com, as a vCard (.vcf) file. Android's Contacts app exports a .VCF file too. Google Contacts, on a computer, can import a vCard and export a CSV file, which Excel opens. So on either phone the route is: get the contacts into Google Contacts, then export a CSV. Or use Sigbot's iPhone app: tick the people to copy into Sigbot, then export them to Excel or CSV. That's in the iPhone app from version 2.1.3, and coming to Android next.

1. iPhone: export a vCard, then turn it into a CSV.

Apple's tools export a vCard, either from the iPhone or from iCloud.com. Google Contacts turns that into a CSV file. You'll need a computer for the last step.

On the iPhone

Export a list

  1. Open the Contacts app and tap Lists at the top left.
  2. Touch and hold a list, or make one with Add List.
  3. Tap Export, choose the fields to include, then tap Done.
  4. Choose how to send or save the contact cards, such as Mail: email them to yourself.
Or on iCloud.com

Export everyone

  1. On the iPhone, check iCloud Contacts is on: Settings > [your name] > iCloud, tap See All (or Show All), then turn on Contacts.
  2. On a computer, go to icloud.com/contacts and sign in.
  3. Select the Actions button at the top of the list, then Select All Contacts.
  4. Select the Share button, then Export vCard. They all go into one vCard.
Then, in Google Contacts

Turn the vCard into a CSV

  1. On a computer, go to Google Contacts (contacts.google.com).
  2. Choose Import > Select file, pick the .vcf file, then Import.
  3. Select the contacts. For all of them, tick any one, then Selection Actions > All.
  4. Choose More actions > Export, choose Google CSV, then Export. Open the .csv file in Excel.
Why not open the vCard in Excel? Excel's list of the file formats it supports includes CSV, but not vCard (.vcf). And the import adds the contacts to your Google account: if you'd rather not keep them there, delete them in Google Contacts once you have the CSV file.

2. Android: export from Google Contacts.

Contacts saved to your Google account sync between your Android phone and Google Contacts, which can export them as a CSV file on a computer. Contacts saved only on the phone take one more step.

Saved to your Google account

Export a CSV on a computer

  1. On a computer, go to Google Contacts (contacts.google.com), signed in to the same Google account as the phone.
  2. Select the contacts: tick each one, or for all of them tick any one, then Selection Actions > All.
  3. Choose More actions > Export, choose Google CSV, then Export.
  4. Open the .csv file in Excel.
Saved on the phone only

Export a .VCF file first

  1. Contacts labelled Phone, Device or Local in your Contacts app aren't in your Google account.
  2. In Google's Contacts app, tap Fix & manage > Export to file, choose the accounts, then Export to .VCF file.
  3. Get the file to a computer, import it into Google Contacts and export a CSV, as in the iPhone steps above.

Other phone makers' Contacts apps word these steps a little differently. With a work or school Google account, Google says you can't select all the contacts in the company Directory.

3. Straight to Excel or CSV, with Sigbot.

Sigbot's iPhone app can copy the contacts on your phone into Sigbot, into a personal folder called Phone contacts. From there you export them to Excel or CSV, on their own or with everyone whose email signature is in your Outlook. It's in the iPhone app from version 2.1.3, and coming to the Android app next.

Step 1

Import from your phone

Get Sigbot from the App Store and log in. On the Contacts tab, tap +, then Import from your phone. Read what happens, tap Continue and allow access to your contacts.

Step 2

Tick who to copy

Nothing is ticked for you: tick the people you want, or Select all, then Import. They go into your Phone contacts folder.

Step 3

Export to Excel or CSV

At sigbot.app, open the Phone contacts folder and choose Export Data > Excel (.xlsx) or CSV (.csv).

sigbot.app/contacts
The Sigbot contacts table with the Export Data menu open, offering Excel and CSV downloads

Someone already in Sigbot? If a contact on your phone might already be in Sigbot, with the same email address or number, say, the app asks "Is this the same person?" before treating them as one. Yes fills in what Sigbot is missing from your phone; No adds them as a separate contact.

What's in the file. The same columns as every Sigbot export: First Name, Last Name, Email, Phone, Mobile, Company, Job Title, Location and more. Export just the Phone contacts folder, or everything at once. Phone contacts count towards your plan's contact allowance, like any other contact (see pricing).

Only what you tick leaves your phone. Those contacts are copied into your own Sigbot account, and Sigbot uses them only to show them to you: in your list, on the map and for Caller ID. It never messages them, and you can delete them at any time, like any other contact. Importing doesn't change the contacts on your phone. More in our privacy policy.

The rest of your contacts are in your email. Connect Outlook or Microsoft 365, and Sigbot reads the signatures in your mailbox and files each person as a contact, so the same export can include everyone whose signature is in your mailbox: how to extract contacts from Outlook emails into Excel.

For a team. Your Phone contacts folder is yours alone. On team plans you can add any of them to a team folder, so the whole team can use them: how to share contacts with your team.

On Android today, use Google Contacts as above: Import from your phone is coming to the Android app next.

Questions.

Can I export iPhone contacts straight to Excel?

Not straight to a spreadsheet. An iPhone exports contacts as contact cards in a vCard (.vcf) file, from the Contacts app or from iCloud.com, and Excel opens CSV files, not vCards. Import the vCard into Google Contacts on a computer and export a CSV from there, or use Sigbot's iPhone app, which exports to Excel or CSV.

How do I export all my iPhone contacts at once?

With iCloud Contacts turned on, go to icloud.com/contacts on a computer, select the Actions button, then Select All Contacts, then the Share button and Export vCard. Apple puts them all in one vCard file.

How do I export Android contacts to a CSV file?

If they're saved to your Google account, open Google Contacts on a computer, select them, then choose More actions, Export and Google CSV. For contacts saved only on the phone, first export them from Google's Contacts app with Fix & manage > Export to file, import that .VCF file into Google Contacts, then export a CSV.

What's the difference between a vCard and a CSV file?

A vCard (.vcf) holds contact cards for one or more people, for address books such as iCloud and Google Contacts to import. A CSV file is a table, one row per contact, which Excel opens. Phones export vCards; Google Contacts can turn one into a CSV.

How does Sigbot get my phone contacts into Excel?

In Sigbot's iPhone app (version 2.1.3 or later), choose Import from your phone and tick the people to copy. They go into a personal Phone contacts folder in Sigbot. Open that folder at sigbot.app and choose Export Data, then Excel or CSV. It's coming to the Android app next.

Does Sigbot copy every contact on my phone?

No. Only the contacts you tick are copied into your Sigbot account, and none are ticked for you. Sigbot uses them only to show them to you, in your list, on the map and for Caller ID, and never messages them. You can delete them at any time.

Will importing change the contacts on my phone?

No. Importing copies the contacts you tick into Sigbot. The contacts on your phone stay as they are.

Does Sigbot's Import from your phone work on Android?

Not yet. It's in the iPhone app from version 2.1.3, and is coming to the Android app next. On Android today, export your contacts from Google Contacts.
